Researched by: Kate Bargamian and Kylee Boucher, Grosse Ile High School Students
General Characteristics:
The wild grape is found in Central to Eastern Canada to Mexico, the eastern United States, and portions found in western United States.
The common species for the wild grape is a grape vine.
Commercial Value:
They have excellent nutritional and sensory properties that are the main factors responsible for the great popularity of commercial interest.
Wildlife Value:
They are an important food source for lots of wild animals like coyotes, possums, specifically birds. Bees love their flowers and so do butterflies.
Grape vines sort of need other trees that almost depend on them, growing up their trunks. But over time they can strangle the trees and eventually pull them down.
Interesting Tidbits:
Wild grapes are about 6mm in diameter. Grapes grow on vines that can be produced up to 20 pounds of fruit each year
