You can help

Each year, the Grosse Ile Nature & Land Conservancy delivers results that strengthen the environment and enrich the quality of life on Grosse Ile and throughout the Downriver community. Our work is carried out entirely by dedicated board members and volunteers — we have no paid staff. If you’d like to support this all‑volunteer effort, please consider the following ways to help advance our mission:

  • Become a member of Grosse Ile Grosse Ile Nature and Land Conservancy.  Your support protects the places you love — and, according to IRS rules, your charitable donations may also reduce your taxable income. Your dollars make it all possible.

  • Volunteer your time and energy. We have several committees actively working on a variety of projects. They can always use additional help. The specific area and amount of time you spend is completely up to you.  Volunteers must be at least 18 or accompanied by a parent or legal guardian.

  • Attend our events. GINLC conducts several educational, informational and stewardship events during the year.  Come out and learn something new.  (List of events)

  • Donate land to the Conservancy. This is truly one of the finest legacies someone can leave to future generations. Donation of land will relieve you of the responsibility of taking care of the property and can offer you substantial income tax deductions and estate tax benefits. Most important, if the land is donated because of its conservation value, it will be protected.

  • Join the GINLC Board of Directors. We are always looking for conservation minded leaders who would like to become more involved and help set priorities for the Conservancy.

  • Make a targeted donation. In addition to the regular membership donation, individuals may designate a donation for one or more projects of their choice. This will ensure that your donation is used on only the designated projects.

  • Save on Taxes using Qualified Charitable Distributions. Since we are a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, we gratefully welcome Qualified Charitable Distributions (QCDs) from supporters wishing to make a tax‑advantaged gift directly from their IRA. A QCD usually provides a greater tax benefit than a regular charitable donation because the amount you give is excluded from your taxable income, even if you take the standard deduction, and it can also help lower AGI‑based costs like Medicare premiums and Social Security taxation. A normal donation only reduces taxes if you itemize and never lowers your AGI. Donors must be at least 70½, and the transfer must go directly from the IRA custodian to GINLC. Your IRA custodian will know how to facilitate this type of gift. The IRS sets annual limits on QCDs, which may come from traditional, inherited, or inactive SEP/SIMPLE IRAs. GINLC will provide a written acknowledgment letter for tax‑record purposes.  Donors should consult IRS resources or a tax advisor for the most current rules and limits.

  • Donate equipment or other items. The conservancy always welcomes specific equipment or other items that would assist with various projects. Some examples would be chain saws, weed whips, shovels, rakes, office space or furniture, etc. The GINLC Newsletter often lists equipment and other items which are needed.

  • Leave a Legacy. Donate land or assets to the conservancy through your will. This will allow you to control the land or assets during your lifetime, but assure its protection or use for future generations.

  • Share the news. If you are pleased with our efforts to improve the quality of life on Grosse Ile, pass on the word about the Conservancy to neighbors and friends. We are always looking for new members and would be happy speak with you.

  • Sign up for a community awards program.  These companies contribute a portion of their revenue to Grosse Ile Nature and Land Conservancy every time you shop.  Just sign up.
