General Characteristics:
Range: the north east region of North America .
It looks like a tree, It is green, The leaves are large (5 to 7 inches long) with rounded, shallow lobes. They are dark green above and gray to shiny white and downy below.

Wildlife Value:
It provides cover for birds and mammals. The acorns are sweet and are an important food source for wildlife like squirrels, mice, white-tailed deer, beaver, black bear, and a variety of birds, including ducks and turkey.

General Characteristics: Range is north central and northeast U.S. It is commonly found in lowlands, along edges of streams and in swamps. It is long-lived, up to 300 to 350 years. Mature height is 60-100 feet. Very common tree on Grosse Ile.
Commercial Value: It is a hard, strong wood. Is sold as white oak and is valued for flooring and fine furniture.
Wildlife Value: Acorns are sweet tasting and are eaten by squirrels, chipmunks, deer, and turkeys.
Interesting Tidbits: Good acorn crop only occurs every 3-5 years.
