John C. Jackson

John C. Jackson, Jr. (February 23, 1945 – February 10, 2021) was a longtime resident of Grosse Ile, Michigan, remembered for his quiet generosity, dedication to conservation, and lasting contributions to environmental projects that enhanced the community.

Jackson was born in Detroit, Michigan, to Margaret Beardslee and John C. Jackson, Sr., and grew up in nearby Trenton. As a young man, he played football in high school and later built a successful career with Ford Motor Company, where he worked for many years before retiring.

Many decades ago, Jackson built his home on Grosse Ile, where he became deeply connected to the community and its natural environment. In addition to his professional career, he owned and managed farmland that produced soybeans and corn. After retiring from Ford, he enjoyed traveling and spending time overseeing his farms.

Jackson was widely known as an avid conservationist and a strong supporter of environmental initiatives on Grosse Ile. Through his generosity, numerous projects were completed that improved public access to nature and enhanced local habitats. His contributions began in 2016 with the construction of a photo blind and bench at the Gibraltar Bay Unit of the Detroit River International Wildlife Refuge. In 2017, he supported environmental education through the Salmon in the Classroom program at Grosse Ile High School and the Sturgeon Project at Shumate Middle School.

Jackson also played a key role in improvements at Sunrise Park. His support helped fund the construction of the park’s north retaining wall and kayak slide in 2018, followed by the south retaining wall in 2019. These structures, along with landscaping improvements, stabilized the slopes along the park’s stairway and enhanced the beauty and accessibility of the park. In 2020, work began on additional improvements, including the installation of sewer and water lines to support future park enhancements.

In recognition of his outstanding commitment to conservation and community, the Grosse Ile Nature and Land Conservancy honored Jackson with its Conservationist of the Year award in 2019. His generosity and enthusiasm for protecting natural spaces helped create lasting improvements that continue to benefit residents and visitors alike.

Despite his significant contributions, Jackson remained a private individual who preferred quiet conversations and collaborative work over public attention. Friends and colleagues recall his thoughtful support of projects and his genuine interest in preserving the natural beauty of Grosse Ile for future generations.

John C. Jackson passed away on February 10, 2021, at Wyandotte Hospital at the age of 75. He was preceded in death by his parents and his sister, Mary Joanne Clark. He is survived by cousins and many friends, and was laid to rest at Southfield Cemetery.

In April 2024, the Grosse Ile Nature and Land Conservancy honored Jackson’s legacy by dedicating the John C. Jackson Resource Center as its headquarters and educational space. The center stands as a lasting tribute to his commitment to conservation and his enduring impact on the preservation of Grosse Ile’s natural resources.
