Saturday, January 8, 2022: Winter Walk at Meridian Woods

Meridian Woods. Eastside of Meridian Road across from Meridian Elementary School, Grosse Ile. 1-3 pm.

Join us for a walk through the woods with our naturalist to look for signs of our winter wildlife! We’ll be discussing how winter affects our plants and animals, and some of the strategies they use to make it through the winter.

Sunday, February 13, 2022: Birds on the Bay

Airport Natural Area. 28820 East River Rd, Grosse Ile. 1-3 pm

Let’s take a winter walk through the natural area. Discover the birds that stay during the winter season and learn about how they handle this harsh time of the year.  We will focus on winter birds and the Great Backyard Bird Count.

All experience levels are welcome.  Please bring binoculars if you have them.

Saturday, March 19, 2022: Pools, puddles, and ponds.

Meridian Woods. Eastside of Meridian Road across from Meridian Elementary School, Grosse Ile. 1-3 pm.

Hike through the woods with our naturalist as we focus on vernal pools and amphibians like salamanders and frogs.

Saturday April 23, 2022: Earth Day Celebration
St. James Episcopal Church 25150 E River Rd, Grosse Ile. 1-5 pm

Join GINLC and the St James Green Team for an Earth Day Celebration. We plan activities for the whole family involving animals, bird house painting, and seed planting. Learn about coyotes, relocating trees, Plastics in Our Environment, and stewarding your backyard by attending the expert presentations. Browse the informative exhibits covering healthy lawns, gardens, butterflies, photo contest, and local GI groups.    Activities for all!

Join us for a walk to discover the different ways nature lets us know that spring is right around the corner. Our focus is on early spring birds, frogs, salamanders, and flowers.

Enter at 28820 East River Rd, Grosse Ile, 1-3 pm
GINLC hosts will be available to open the trails of the Airport Natural Area every Sunday from May to October. Spend a few hours enjoying the trails, ponds, bays, lookouts, and woods of this hidden gem.

Thursday, May 5th, 2022 @ 5:00 pm Take It Outside High School Photo Contest (2021-2022) Entry Deadline

The Grosse Ile Nature & Land Conservancy invites High School students to participate in the 2021-2022 Nature & Wildlife Photo Contest!   We are searching for photos captured locally (within Wayne, Washtenaw, and Monroe Counties) that inspire us to appreciate and steward our environment:  air, water, land, wildlife, resources, and ecosystems.

2021/2022 Categories

      New Beginnings

      Nature in Distress

      Nature at its Best       

Entries will be judged by category with winners receiving cash prizes for 1st place, 2nd place, and 3rd place in each category.  A single Grand Prize overall winner will be named.

​Sunday, May 15, 2022: Early Bird Migration Walk

Meridian Woods. Eastside of Meridian Road across from Meridian Elementary School, Grosse Ile. 8-10 am.

Focus: Spring migration. Walk through the woods as we discover the birds that call Southeast Michigan home during the spring and summer! We’ll learn the benefits of this long flight north and their importance in the natural world.

Focus: wetland plants and animals. Explore the natural area to discover what makes wetlands so great! We’ll learn about the different plants and animals that live in the area and their importance for humans too.

Saturday, July 16, 2022: Things with Wings

Airport Natural Area. 28820 East River Rd, Grosse Ile. 1-3 pm.

On this walk we will learn about insects on the move- look for praying mantids and their egg cases (ootheca), bees, butterflies, dragonflies, and more.

Saturday, August 20, 2022: Lovely Lotus Walk

Airport Natural Area. 28820 East River Rd, Grosse Ile, 1-3 pm.

Enjoy a guided hike down to the American Lotus bed to observe this beautiful wetland flower.  Discover what makes this plant so important for wildlife, technology, and humans.  We will also observe the other plants and animals found alongside the Lotus during late summer in the marsh.

 

Saturday, September 17, 2022: Twilight Hike.

Airport Natural Area. 28820 East River Rd, Grosse Ile 7-9 pm.

Join us as we learn about nocturnal and twilight wildlife. We will listen for frogs, use a bat detector to find bats, search for moths and fireflies, and discuss nocturnal animal adaptations.

Centennial Farm. 25797 Third St. Grosse Ile. 6:30-8:00 pm

These are awesome birds of prey! We’ll learn about the owls in our area and their characteristics. We’ll end the night with a hike to attempt to find some owls. This is one of our most popular events.

Meridian Woods. Eastside of Meridian Road across from Meridian Elementary School, Grosse Ile. 1-3 pm.

Join us for an educational walk on the (almost) shortest day of the year.  Our focus will be on signs of winter, seasonal adaptations, and animal homes.

Saturday, January 14, 2023, @ 1-2:30 pm Winter Waterfowl ID Walk
Sunrise Park. East River Rd & Grosse Ile Parkway, Grosse Ile, Michigan

Are you interested in learning to identify your winter waterfowl? Join us for our Winter Waterfowl ID Walk on Grosse Ile in partnership with Detroit Audubon. Join us as we explore Sunrise Park, review some bird identification tips and common species, and look through scopes as we search for winter waterfowl along the Detroit River. It is usually cold, so be sure to dress warmly. Park and meet in the gravel parking lot behind the GI History Society Depot Museum & Custom House 25020 East River Road.
